In New Jersey, the penalties for speeding are severe. In addition to a potential loss of license and heavy fines, persons convicted of speeding may have points assessed to their driving record by New Jersey Motor Vehicle Services. Many times, those with points assessed to their driving record face higher insurance premiums. Those convicted of speeding up to 14 mph above limit can expect to have 2 points assessed to their driving record by the Motor Vehicle Commission while those convicted of speeding 15 to 29 mph above the limit can expect to have 4 points assessed. In addition, a conviction for speeding 30 mph or more above the limit will result in the assessment of 5 points.
