Business Interruption Coverage for COVID-19

Not many business owners know it but their business owners’ insurance coverage might have business interruption coverage included. This coverage can help those businesses that have been ordered to close during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic that has reached the United States over the past few weeks.

As more and more states are issuing mandates forcing the closure of businesses like gyms, movie theaters, retail stores, restaurants, bars, and other places where large numbers of people can gather, business owners need to make every effort to protect themselves so they are able to exit the pandemic still in operation.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a statewide curfew recommendation on Monday, March 16 that asks those who are not emergency personnel or do not need to travel for an essential reason to remain off the roads each day between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am. Governor Murphy also announced that as of 8 pm Monday, March 16 all restaurants, bars, and other food establishments were to close their dining rooms and can only remain open for takeout orders, delivery, or curbside pickup.

Despite these announcements, grocery stores, pharmacies, medical offices, and other essential businesses will remain open. The goal of the recommended curfew and closing all locations where 50 or more people can gather at the same time is to curb the spread of the virus.

Are you a business owner unsure of your insurance policy and what it offers in the way of business interruption coverage? It’s important that you speak with an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Was a claim denied under this insurance policy by your carrier? Do not take ‘no’ for an answer. Your business is at stake. Don’t wait a minute longer in an attempt to feel out the commercial climate.
