When a family member has been charged with an act of domestic violence in New Jersey, the police will normally obtain a temporary restraining order against the person who committed the violent act. Within a short time period, the court will schedule a hearing to determine whether a permanent restraining order will be issued.
In New Jersey, the judge in a domestic violence case will decide whether an act of domestic violence occurred and whether future acts are likely. If the restraining order is granted it is permanent and bars and contact in the future.
