In New Jersey, lawyers are certified in a particular field of law to help the public make informed decisions when selecting an attorney to represent them. The Supreme Court of New Jersey certifies attorneys in four areas: civil trial law, criminal trial law, matrimonial law, and workers' compensation law. Attorneys must exhibit a high degree of skill and knowledge in one of these areas to be certified.
New Jersey Certified Civil Trial Lawyers are part of a very exclusive association. Less than 2% of all New Jersey lawyers have achieved certification in the field of civil trial law. Becoming certified in civil trial law requires the fulfillment of certain standards, which include:
- Being a member in good standing of the New Jersey bar for 5 years or more;
- Fulfilling continuing legal education requirements;
- Demonstrating a substantial level of trial experience in civil law matters;
- Earning the admiration of fellow attorneys and judges in the field of civil law; and
- Passing a written examination.
