For example, a first DWI conviction can result in a loss of driving privileges for at least 3 months and up to 1 year depending on the amount of alcohol in a person's system. In addition, the penalty includes significant fines and surcharges.

In addition, anyone under the age of 21 possessing a blood alcohol level of 0.01% or more, but less than 0.08% has violated New Jersey's underage drinking and driving laws. Under N.J.S.A. § 39:4-50.14, a licensed driver under the age of 21 with a blood alcohol level of 0.01% or more will lose his or her license for a period of 30 days or more. An unlicensed driver who violates this law will be prohibited from obtaining a driver's license for a period of 30 days or more from the date that person is eligible to obtain a license or the date of conviction, whichever is later. In addition, a violator must perform at least 15 days of community service and complete an alcohol education program.
