"Simple" possession is often referred to as the possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana. Under N.J.S.A. § 2C:35-10, possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana is a disorderly persons offense. The penalties for "simple" possession are severe. A person convicted for the first time for marijuana possession in an amount of 50 grams or less could possibly face a six (6) month prison term and a $1,000 fine.

Ordinarily, citations are issued to those charged with "simple" possession of marijuana in Monroe. However, persons charged with possession of marijuana may be arrested and taken to the Monroe Police headquarters. If you have been arrested for marijuana possession in Monroe, you may not be allowed to leave on your own. For example, a person under the age of 18 charged with marijuana possession must be released to a parent or guardian.

Persons charged solely with "simple" possession of marijuana can expect their case to be handled in Monroe Municipal Court. Monroe Municipal Court is located at 1630 Perrineville Road. The Honorable George Boyd presides over the court.
