Middlesex County Municipal Court

New Jersey Municipal Courts have limited jurisdiction. "Limited jurisdiction" refers to a Municipal Court's authority to hear cases. In general, a Municipal Court has authority over traffic tickets, minor criminal offenses, and local ordinance violations.

Some common Municipal Court traffic ticket offenses include:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk Driving: DWI / DUI
  • Driving on a Suspended or Revoked License
  • Driving Without Insurance
  • Careless or Reckless Driving
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Regular Middlesex County Municipal Court criminal offenses include:

  • Simple Assault
  • Shoplifting (Theft)
  • Drug Possession (Marijuana)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Underage Drinking

Examples of local municipal ordinance violations are:

  • Leash Law infractions
  • Building Code violations

Do I need a lawyer for Municipal Court?

A lawyer is not required for Municipal Court. However, you do have a right to counsel. Courtroom Standards

Courtroom Standards vary by municipality. Some common rules of Municipal Court include:

  • No weapons are permitted in the courtroom or the municipal building.
  • Please remain seated quietly in the courtroom. Proceedings are taped and any background noise may cause interference on the tapes.
  • Food, drink or gum chewing is not permitted in the courtroom.
  • Newspaper reading is not permitted while court is in session.
  • Smoking is prohibited by law in all government buildings.
  • Please avoid bringing small children to court. If you must bring them, please be prepared to wait outside the courtroom until your case is called.
  • Please wear suitable clothing to court. Shirts and shoes are required. Hats are not permitted.
  • When your name or the case you are involved in is called, come forward to the podium to speak to the judge. Do not approach the bench at any time.
