Crimes arising out of Caldwell are handled in either the Caldwell Municipal Court or the Essex County Superior Court. Essex County Superior Court is located at 50 West Market Street in Newark, NJ. Non-indictable offenses (disorderly persons offenses) arising out of Caldwell are handled in the Caldwell Municipal Court, which is located at One Provost Square. The Honorable Donald M. Garson presides over the Court. Marijuana possession, underage drinking, disorderly persons offenses and driving while intoxicated (DWI) matters are regularly handled in the Caldwell Municipal Court.

Caldwell Marijuana Possession
Caldwell Municipal Court handles all cases involving the possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana. In New Jersey, the penalties are harsh. Under N.J.S.A. § 2C:35-16, a conviction for marijuana possession will result in a license suspension of at least 6 months and up to 2 years. Additional penalties may include a $1,000 fine and up to 6 months imprisonment.

Caldwell Underage Drinking
Under N.J.S.A. §2C:33-15, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol. If convicted, a defendant can expect a fine of $500 or more, driver's license suspension or postponement, and mandatory enrollment into an alcohol education program.

Caldwell Disorderly Person
In New Jersey, improper behavior or offensive language may be illegal. Under N.J.S.A. § 2C:33-2, fighting, threatening, creating a hazardous condition, or using unreasonably loud or offensive language may result in a petty disorderly persons charge. The penalty for this offense includes up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.

From the New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 15W) or the Garden State Parkway (Exit 145):

Take Route I-280 West to Exit 5B (527 North Caldwell). At the end of Livingston Avenue, turn right onto Eagle Rock Avenue and take the first left onto Roseland Avenue. At the end of Roseland Avenue, turn right onto Bloomfield Avenue.

From Route I-80 Westbound (from New York):

Take Exit 52, following signs for the Caldwells onto Passaic Avenue. Go 3.4 miles and turn left onto Bloomfield Avenue. Go approximately two miles.

From Route I-287:

Take Exit 41 to Route I-80 Eastbound, and follow directions below.

From Route I-80 Eastbound (from Pennsylvania):

Take Exit 47B onto Route 46 East. After the second traffic light (Hook Mt./Chapin Road), stay right and follow the signs for "The Caldwells - Newark" onto Bloomfield Avenue. Take Bloomfield Avenue through West Caldwell (four traffic lights) and Caldwell (six traffic lights).

Local:

From the west, follow Bloomfield Avenue.

By Bus:

Caldwell is served by Decamp Bus #33 and New Jersey Transit Bus #29.
